Only in the South do you find pools and supplies at Walmart in February. Yesterday it was 87° outside. Warm enough for a dip in the pool!

Or just going in.....
and out
(my toe nails are definitely not summer ready)

And maybe a little splash or two

A little unprepared for the warm weather means...
last years swimmers.

Let's have a closer look at those chubby legs and some cheek hanging out.

"Ready to go back inside and get out of these huge swim trunks."

This is how our morning went...

After getting Michael out of his crib this morning we went downstairs for breakfast. I put Michael in his high chair and offered him some cheerios and milk. Mother nature soon called. Into the bathroom I went and was shocked to find this in my downstairs sink:
(click to enlarge) I sprayed him with some Raid and smashed him with the can. Another bug spray is scheduled! This is not the first time I've seen a scorpion inside my house. Back in September I found one too.

I went visiting teaching this morning and I was in charge of making the treat.
Vanishing Oatmeal Raisin Cookies:
(Want the recipe? It's under your lid of Quaker Oats.)

Michael anxiously waiting to have a cookie. (I think he's saying "peese"- please.)

He's thinking ---mmm my mom makes the best cookies.
Saying cheese for the camera.
Our morning didn't start off great but it sure ended sweet. Nothing like a cookie right after breakfast!

*One other sweet thing that happened this morning is Joe calling and finding out that he can have his "non-ringing" phone replaced. Our 1 year warranty ends tomorrow.

Lookin' for some good reads

Michael and I have been going to the library weekly. I've checked out books for him, and never thought to get anything for myself until this week. I had no idea what to check out. You can't judge a book by it's cover but that was all I could go off of. I know very few authors. Plus I don't read much(hence I don't know many authors). Sure I've read the Twilight series but that was only because everyone was talking about it. Other than that I have no idea of a good read. I'm looking for suggestions. They can't be too new or I won't find it at the library.

What books do you recommend?

Who is your favorite author?

I'll take any suggestions. I'm willing to give any book a try- just remember I will hold you accountable for it! :)

Our first date...

since Michael was born happened on Friday. I know you all are shocked that it took us nearly 17 months to go on a date with out Michael. Believe me I was too. It took a lot of convincing to get Joe to leave Michael with a babysitter. We agreed that we'd put Michael to bed at his normal time of 7pm and go out. (My mom says we're spoiled with this bedtime). Thanks Zoila for hanging out at our house!

I asked Joe to drive his truck so it would feel like a real date since I usually drive us all in my car (I've never ridden in his truck). It felt so different ridding in his truck, it felt like a real first date. Remember we've only left Michael once with my mom. So other than that we've always gone places with Michael, so I'd drive us in my car.

We decided to see a movie and chose "He's Just Not That Into You". It was good for the most part. We used our free movie tickets we got at Christmas from family but just had to buy soda and popcorn. I sat down in the theater and saved our seats while Joe got our food. There were four open seats in the row and I was saving the middle two. A women asked me if Joe's seat and the one next to him was empty. I said I could scoot over and they could have my seat and the empty one next to me. I kinda regret being nice to her. During the movie she'd talk out loud and guess what would happen next or narrate what was happening. I don't know if she was informing her "hard to follow a chick flick movie hubby" or just talks during movies in theaters. Ugh I tried to ignore her talking and still was able to enjoy the movie.

After the movie we went to Dairy Queen and got some cool treats. I really enjoyed our date and hope we won't wait so long to go again. Thanks Babe for a fun evening!

Lesson Learned

Don't leave your wallet sitting on the computer after paying bills.

Then go grocery shopping, fill your cart, go to pay and come to find out your wallet is not in your purse.

Black Bean and Zucchini Chilaquiles

For dinner tonight I tried out a new recipe. It was really easy and quick. We all enjoyed it so I thought I'd share.

Black Bean and Zucchini Chilaquiles
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 heaping cup chopped onion
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, diced
  • 28-oz can crushed or pureed tomatoes
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 20-oz can black beans, or 2 1/2 cups cooked (from about 1 cup raw)
  • 12 corn tortillas, torn into several pieces
  • 1 medium zucchini, grated
  • 8 oz grated cheddar cheese
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees

Heat oil in a heavy saucepan. Saute the onion until translucent. Add the green pepper and continue to saute until it has softened and the onions are golden. Stir in the tomatoes and seasonings, and simmer over low heat for 10 min.

Oil a 9x13 inch shallow casserole dish. Layer as follows: half the tortillas, half the tomato sauce, half the black beans, half the zucchini and half the cheese. Repeat. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly. Let stand for 5 to 10 min. Cut into squares and serve.

Enjoy!

Playing in the park

This afternoon we enjoyed a visit to the park with a few friends. It was about 80 degrees along with a nice breeze. It feels like summer already.

Enjoying the swings.
Michael not liking the bark on his hands.
Michael saw the basketball and took off after it saying, "ball ball".

I think we'll keep going to the park to enjoy the nice weather.

Lyza's High School Tag

Lyza tagged all PHS graduates and that includes me. I tag anyone who would like to participate.

1. What year did you graduate? 2001

2. Did you date someone from high school? Yes, a few.

3. What kind of car did you drive? I started out with an '89 navy blue Camry & wreck it in a one car wreck (no details needed)...then ended up with an 82? burnt pumpkin orange Camry. The burnt pumpkin orange is no exaggeration. The carpet caught on fire one day on my way to school. I was on the freeway so I waited until I could exit to put it out. I found an old plastic bottle on the road and I was able to smother it. Someone also threw a soda on my car while in the parking lot. I wish I knew who did it. I assume they just thought my car was ugly and didn't know who owned it.

4. What was the most embarrassing moment of high school? I don't think this would be my most embarrassing but it's what I remember. I was feeling paranoid at school one day and thought a teacher was staring at me in the hall. I asked them if they were and they said nope. I walked away feeling pretty dumb.

5. Were you a party animal? Let me answer with this... Does watching a movie with a few friends and falling asleep sound like a senior party?

6. Were you considered a flirt? No

7. Were you in band, orchestra or choir? I was in Treble Choir my sophomore and junior year. My senior year I was in Jazz Choir.

8. Were you a nerd? I don't think so.

9. Were you on any varsity teams? I'll say yes by the fact that I was a cheerleader but we only had one team.

10. Did you get expended or expelled? Nope but I got a couple girls expelled. I even went to court as a witness. (I saw a fight break out between two girls and a police officer. I worked in the timeout room as an assistant.)

11. Can you still sing the fight song? You better believe it. I learned our school dance to it.

12. Who were your favorite teachers? Mr. Peterson- teacher & Mrs. Raebel- coach and teacher

13. What classes do you wish you would have taken? Photography or sewing- I don't think it was offered at our school though.

14. What was your schools full name? Pasco Senior High School

15. School mascot? Bulldog. I was able to be the mascot at a back to school teacher meeting. It was so much fun. I rubbed a teachers' bald head, I got a few good laughs for that one. I was so hot though!

16. Did you go to homecoming and who with? Yes, Travis Adamson my Jr year.

17. Where did you go on senior skip day? I think I went out to eat with Stephanie Hoegh and a couple of her friends to a mexican restaurant. Then we stopped by her grandma's? I'm not sure this could have been during an assembly. :)

18. Were you in any clubs? Natural Helpers

19. Who was your prom date? Jr. year- Warren Beck Sr. year- Travis Adamson- I asked him as a friend since I had just broken up with a boyfriend.

20. What do you remember most about graduation? Spencer running off the stage and out of the stadium after receiving his diploma. I walked down the aisle to my seat with David Schmick. I also wore a cute orange skirt I bought & I still own it.

21. What advice would you give yourself? Actually develop study habbits.

22. Are you planning on going to any of your reunions? If I'm already in town, otherwise no.

23. If you could go back and do it again would you? Once was enough.

I forgive you because you were asleep, I hope.

Saturday night while I was peacefully sleeping I was abruptly woken by Joe's fist hitting my nose. I yelled out a small yelp and rolled over but before I could he woke and said he was sorry. So was he really asleep if he woke up that quick?

Joe and I have both been talking and acting out our dreams lately- or so we tell each other. Practically everyday we have a story to tell of how one of us yelled out in our dream, laughed, or even sat up and crawled around on the bed. For some reason Joe thinks it funny to fake sleep talk right before he falls asleep, but he doesn't fool me. I can tell he's faking because it never makes sense. His real sleep talk actually makes sense and isn't the name of a random animal.

I don't know what's causing all this to happen. It's no wonder I've been feeling more tired lately & Michael seems to have been affected by it as well. The past week or two he's been waking up several times before we even go to bed. He's also been waking up around 4am too and will be sitting up when I come in. Last night he was sitting up so I gently touched his face and he just laid back down. I sure hope we can get some peaceful sleep around here soon. Too many loony sleepers.

A few known words

Here are a few of Michael's words. He can be such a chatter box, mostly talking nonsense. Lately his most said word is BOO although it's not in the video. He's always trying to start a game of peek-a-boo. At the beginning I was trying to get Michael to beat-box. Joe recently taught this to him after watching an episode of Everybody hates Chris which was about the Fat Boys I've only gotten him on camera once and it's not worth loading. I'll try to get one worth blogging, we think it's pretty funny.

Happy Anniversary House

Today is our one year anniversary for owning our home. We've made some improvements but it feels like we still have a ways to go. Her are a few things we've done to improve the house over the past year.

Grass was a huge improvement to our bare backyard. Too bad we didn't get sod when it looked like this. We waited to try and grow grass and let the weeds take over. Sod makes a huge difference!

We were able to do a little landscaping in the front yard: I switched out a light fixture in our 1/2 bath. I had to fill in the gap where there was no sheet rock behind the previous fixture. Thanks Laura for your advice in getting it done. I think it turned out well. Now I just need to repaint the bathroom . I don't like the color I chose. I went too blue. Of course our deck was a nice addition to our backyard before our grass. We also added a few shelves for storage here and there. We've only managed to paint our Kitchen, Living room, Master Bathroom, Michael's room and our half bath. We still have the upstairs hall & stairs, the Master Bedroom, the guest/sewing room, and Michael's bathroom. I hope we'll be able to finish painting over the next couple months. Hopefully we'll make better paint choices and we won't have to repaint anything again. We've definitely enjoyed our home and yard, even if it's a lot of work. What a difference it makes to drive up and unload your groceries from your driveway. We love our house! Here's to another great year!

Sweetheart Tag

I've been tagged by Danielle to do the Sweet♥ Tag. I've been needing to share our story. I'm warning you this is a long post! Here it goes...

1. Where did you first meet your sweetheart?

Joe likes to say that we first met at the airport. It is partially true- we first laid eyes on each other there. We really met online in a chat room. LDSchat to be exact. I was talking to a few guys at a time individually and decided I liked aboveaveragejoe the best. We continued to talk online on instant messenger for about a week. Then we started talking on the phone and this continued every night for a couple months until I convinced him to come visit me. We had seen pictures of each other that we'd sent either online or through the mail. Here are a few that I received in the mail.

2. What do you remember about him/her the most?

At the airport I was so nervous but so excited. I waited for him to walk through the security gates and when I saw him I smiled so big. He was smiling as well but he was trying to hide it (he later told me this). I remember thinking it was him, it was really him. The voice matched who I'd been talking to over that past 3 months. I though he was hot! We went to rent a couple movies before we drove home to meet the family. I remember him standing behind me and wrapping his arms around me. It felt so good and I didn't want it to end. He smelled really good and apparently I did too because he stuck his nose near my neck and smelled me. I'm pretty sure I squirmed and laughed.

3. Who asked who out first? I can't say that either one of us did. We had things planned out ahead of time that we'd do while he was there. I guess I asked him because I had to convince him to come visit me in the first place. One funny tidbit I remember is while we were having this conversation about him possibly coming to visit I had the radio on and Christina Aguilara's "Come on over" song was playing. I told him it was a sign and he had to come visit me.

4. What did you do on your first date?

I have to say that on our first date we went to a Jericho Road concert although that was with family. We did go to the Jericho Road fireside the next night by ourselves so I guess that technically qualifies our first date. Pretty romantic huh? I still remember it being fun though. I even remember what I wore. I wore a short denim skirt I liked, that my mom hated and a white lacy top.
These pictures are not from our first date but a date in the park taking pictures.
We had fun, can you tell?

5. What was your favorite thing to do together when you were dating?

We both enjoyed eating out at restaurants and shopping. We also liked going to movies or staying in to watching movies.

6. When was your first kiss with your sweetheart?

The night we met. We were standing in my parents kitchen after everyone else had either gone to bed or they were somewhere else in the house. We were talking and standing really close to one another, maybe even hugging. (We had to get all our closeness in before we parted ways!) It seemed apparent that we'd end up kissing but I couldn't wait for him to do it. So I did. I don't regret it either.

7. When did you first realize you loved him or her?

At the end of his stay I took him to the airport to drop him off. We said our goodbyes and I turned to head out of the airport. As soon as the doors opened to go outside I balled. I couldn't stop crying. I was sad to see him go and I didn't want him to leave me. I couldn't be without him. When I got home I went downstairs where he'd been sleeping and smelled his pillow. His smelled lingered there and I cried again.

8. Who said it (I love you) first?

Joe did. We were at my parents house alone in a room. I was quite surprised and didn't really respond. I kind of brushed it off, not knowing what to say. After he'd gone home we did tell each other we did on the phone everyday. We still tell each other everyday.

9. How did he/she propose?

The first time or the second time? I always respond this way when people ask me this question. So I'll tell you both times. The first time he proposed we were at the beach in Georgia, this was the second time we'd seen each other. It was 6 months after we first met online and only 14 days of actually being together. We were taking pictures on the sandy beach and I told him that we should write our names or something in the sand. I proceeded to write "Kelsey ♥'s Joe," I then turned around and saw what he had written:
It reads: "Will you marry me?"

I read it and I said something to the effect of "Are you kidding? Is this for real?" He proceeded to get down on one knee and tell me that he loved me and he wanted me to be his wife. He said that he knew he didn't have a ring but we would get one for me. I agreed. He then called my dad to ask him for my hand in marriage. My dad's first reply was something like this, " Isn't it a little fast?". I'm not sure what all was said but he agreed to Joe and I getting married. We then drove straight to a jewelry store in the mall to find the perfect ring. On the way Joe laughed because he'd been thinking about my answer and how I'd said "yeah" and not "yes". So I instantly smiled and said "yes". In deciding between two of the rings Joe asked me if I wanted quality or quantity? I said quality, and so we had a ring. We did have to wait for the ring to be re sized and later went back to pick it up. Joe took the ring from the sales woman and put it on my finger, only it was too big. They either wrote down the wrong size or they hadn't had it re sized at all! We were a little frustrated but the sales woman assured us she would get it fixed asap. So we waited a little while longer and soon we had the ring to go along with the engagement. We went to his parents house and told them. They were all very excited and happy for us. After I left GA I soon arrived at the airport where my parents were there to pick me up. As we were getting my luggage my mom joked about me getting engaged and reached for my hand jokingly. ( she didn't know anything about our engagement). To her surprise there WAS a ring there! My dad and I just looked at each other and laughed. We had gotten her good by keeping the secret. Thinking back I don't recall having a plan as to how I was going to tell her.

The second & last time we got engaged it was Christmas day at my parents house. We were all opening presents and Joe had one specifically for me to open towards the end. When the time came I opened up to a nice pair of black leather gloves. The ring finger on the left hand had a little something extra on it. A diamond engagement ring, not just any diamond ring but MY diamond ring. I said oh thank you- like it was just a gift. It was something that had been mine once before and I felt like I was just getting it back. This makes me laugh thinking about the way I thought about the ring. Joe then said, "You're supposed to say 'yes". Who asked me a question, I thought. But I said yes and proceeded to put the ring on my finger. I think I acted this way because we'd been talking about it somewhat so I was just waiting for it to happen. I think I could have had a little bit better of an attitude. Oh well.

10. What are two things you remember most about your wedding day?

I remember being extremely nervous especially on the drive over to the temple, yet very excited to finally be married. I remember walking into an office at the temple to sign the wedding certificate before the wedding. Joe was already siting there waiting for me. He looked at me and said I looked beautiful. I thought that was so sweet of him and I knew what we were doing was right. During our marriage sealing I couldn't look Joe in the eyes for a long period of time, I was too nervous. I knew I'd just start to cry if I did so I'd look at him, then at everyone else and then back at him. Our Temple Sealer also kept saying Joe's last name wrong. It was kind of funny but annoying at the same time. Thanks for the tag Danielle! I now tag Laura, Melinda & Ashleigh.

Update way past due

Joe will not be deployed in February.
We both didn't think he'd be able to go due to heath issues trying to be resolved. Although I never felt that there was an official "no". I guess I expected to see a letter all typed up or something and I never saw that, so I waited to tell anyone. I was pretty sure he wouldn't go but I wanted to be sure before I told you all. Looks like it was another close call.

pj's, coughs and dead fish = a strange combo

Michael opening his Christmas pj's on Christmas Eve

Michael's wearing his new pj's Too bad Michael looked like this a majority of the time spent at home, with a terrible cold and cough.
But he was still able to pull out a smile and be happy Michael was sad to see Waldo go
He loved to point to him and say "fish"
Waldo was McKenzie and his girlfriend's fish.
He picked it up from his gf's house and brought it home before Christmas.
The next day it died.
They were warned by the store not to name it or it would die sooner.
Poor thing.
